May celebrations kick off in downtown Woodstock, GA, with a trifecta of fantastic events: the Kentucky Derby is on Saturday the 4th of May at 6pm, Cinco de Mayo is the following day on May 5th, and following that is Mother’s Day on Sunday the 12th of May. So where can you go to get all your May celebrations off to the right start? Freight Kitchen & Tap, a restaurant in Woodstock, GA, is the only place to be for these early summertime primers. Let’s take peek and see what they’ve got planned!
The Kentucky Derby, Saturday May 4th
It’s the start of the Triple Crown and one of America’s most famous and truly historic sporting events. We love it for so many reasons – but especially because it’s pure Southern style in all its glory. Churchill Downs is home to the Kentucky Derby and it’s sacred ground when it comes to horse racing, while the history of food and drink at the derby is just as exciting as the race itself – unless you’ve got a winning thoroughbred!
The party in the stands and on the infield usually goes hand-in-hand with copious amounts of Kentucky’s native spirit, bourbon. The drink is made into several classic cocktails, the most notable of which is the official cocktail of the Kentucky Derby, the Mint Julep. Our restaurant in Woodstock, GA, will present the best Mint Julep in town at this year’s Official Kentucky Derby Viewing Party; featuring the largest selection of bourbon whiskey in Woodstock and the freshest locally grown mint, mixed with hand crushed ice. Freight bar staff has perfected the julep just in time to pair it with classic derby foods like Louisville’s famous hot brown sandwiches (available at brunch and dinner) and a host of other complimentary small plates to accompany this great sporting event.
Join the happy hour crowd for a comfortable spot where you can catch America’s most famous horse race and stay for a fantastic Southern style dinner. We’ll feature Mint Julep cocktail specials all night and ladies who wear their derby hats during the race will each receive a complimentary sparkling gift around 6pm. Come pick your favorite pony to win other valuable prizes. The viewing party starts at 4pm!
Cinco de Mayo is Sunday May 5th
Downtown Woodstock has a great Mexican restaurant and they’re sure to be busy for their Cinco event, which means that you’ll need the perfect pre-Cinco spot! Freight will be exploring a couple of hot new Cinco-inspired cocktails by infusing some unique flavor profiles into silver and gold tequilas. Imagine a watermelon margarita, or blueberry-lemonade tequila sunrise. For the bold and adventurous, we’ve even crafted a couple bottles of jalapeno infused tequila as well! These Mexican-inspired flavors will come together all week long at Freight, and over the Cinco weekend we’ll be featuring a Chipotle rubbed beef brisket braise and our Southern version of Carne Asada in a sandwich!
